The distinction between the harnessed and the unharnessed comes down to “willingness and willfulness.”

Willfulness characterizes the unharnessed human will, whereas willingness identifies the strong will of a person who is willing to go where he or she is called or led by a higher power.

This distinction was also described poetically in the play Equus how Dysart came through crisis in the end.
